why couldn't she just have said "tongue sushi"?
went to some chichi television launch last night - rollster's project. wasn't able to eat anything though, as everything had, at one time or another, drawn breath. saw some pretty people, some powerful people, and some pretty and powerful people. a slacker like me could've emerged really depressed faced with all these awfully successful people - instead, i only emerged hungry. which is depressing in a you-so-have-no-drive way. what the heck. not everyone was meant to be rich. some of us were meant to be happy. and some of us were meant to have lots of shoes.
anyway, i did manage to network - that's if you call standing-around-and-drinking-soda-until-you-finally-run-into-someone-you-know "networking". (gosh, that's a lot of dashes.) she was someone i went to college with and now she's a manager at one of the city's better known publishing houses. yay. she gave me her card and said, "send me your manuscript and i'll give it to so-and-so, the book editor." hmmm. can you see it now? Crappy Book by Ophelia Turns Blue. lovely. although am not sure if i should send it right off as i'm only three-quarters of the way done. i had planned to be done by now, but magazine gig came up and i snapped it up like an ill-bred gator (if there's such a thing). now my book is painfully behind schedule. and here's the dilemma: what if i send a query and the first three chapters now and they (haha) like it and want to read the entire thing? then i'm left there unable to cough up any more. but what if i finish it first and send it later, and then they just flat-out reject it 'cause it's "not what they're looking for"? i'll end up with 200 pages of scrap paper. (or what if i just send it now and get rejected now? get it done and over with before adding more man-hours to this project!)
back to last night, as i was hungry - and, apparently, so was scully and cousin despite having wolfed down fish sticks and grilled chops - we left the launch pretty early. (rollster totally understood.) so we headed to zong, a chinese place in the area. heard it was a crowd-drawer. i ended up eating "chop suey" except they called it "braised mixed vegetables and mushrooms". let me tell you, i have had it up to here with chop suey. it feels like i've only eaten chop suey ever since i turned vegetarian. that's four freakin' years of freakin' chop suey every single time i go anywhere near a chinese resto. i should've just gone home, ate my chickpeas and watched conan. except that we started talking about porn - i don't know why - and cousin all but screamed the word "cunnilingus"! i swear, people dropped their chopsticks and stared. and just like that, it was like living an episode of conan.
anyway, it's raining today. again. and no, i'm not wearing thongs again. i've learned my lesson. well, i haven't learned it all that well as i am wearing mules with a three-inch stacked heel. it's not what you would call rain-friendly. will be slip-sliding on my way to the car. i just know it.
