friday night in one of the biggest cities in the world

let me just say that there must be hundreds - maybe even thousands - of bars in this city. also available are (what seems like) an infinite number of restaurants. why is it then that two simple (as in "uncomplicated") gals and one simple (as in "sometimes retarded") boy can't seem to find suitable entertainment on a friday night?

a.m.
wake up 9ish and realize you had missed a 9 a.m. audition. oh well. bygones. sit around and watch cartoons for about an hour. have a bit of bread and some butter before dragging bones to shower.

p.m.
pick up highly-anticipated check from publisher (not that it was a big check, but you've been living on 20 bucks and a nearly-maxed out plastic for the last week). schmooze with managing editor for about twenty minutes, say goodbye, half-walk/half-run to bank, encash highly-anticipated check and head to starbucks. (ahhh! cafe mocha! the sweet life!).

next stop: condo-turned-office of a favorite producer. hand over voice samples, schmooze some more, and receive promises of "more projects to come" and "i'll call you next week". do not hold breath, but do cross fingers.

onward to santi's deli. scout place (incognito - as if anyone would recognize you!) as you are writing a store review. pester salesperson in jaunty, ode-to-switzerland outfit about their wine collection. (your eyes widen every time you catch a glimpse of the price tag and you inwardly thank lucky stars that you're allergic to alcohol!) after walking around for, like, half an hour and suspiciously scribbling whatnots in red notebook, you finally grab a bag of fresh basil (about 65-cents worth) and head for counter. get parking ticket validated (free parking! hahaha!) and head for starbucks again -- this time, for a soda and brownie.

finally, at work. spend an hour turning hard drive inside-out, looking for a document that has magically (appallingly) disappeared. resign self to a saturday morning of intensive research (argh). wait for free birthday food (fellow newsie, kath, turns 30-something). throw confetti as she blows out candles. hope candles are blown before confetti catch fire. eat birthday food (just noodles and ice cream for you - but yummy chicken stuff for everyone else. one of the many tragedies of lacto-ovo vegetarianism). eat and run - as you have another store to check out before closing time. kiss-kiss and wish kath well on her two-week trip to maryland. tell her to bring you some after-halloween candy corn. she pledges to do so.

late p.m.

go to mall (drag cousin along, of course) and check out hip-and-happening store. scout and scribble some more. finally become tired of belly-revealing outfits and head for the nearest hotel (where the rollster is waiting) for some cake and conversation. you order a blueberry cheesecake and water (as cola is 14 times its normal price). you spill a dollop of syrup on shirt and are told, "we can't take you anywhere".

cousin gets bored of the no-smoking scene, and you all hit the road. first, to the valley, where a breezy river awaits. unfortunately, after a few smokes and cans of sodas (bought at almost-normal prices, by the way), you and your friends are told to clear place as the area is only open to public till midnight. you check watch - it's quarter past 12. try to break rules and shrug off curfew, but security guy blows whistle in shrill manner and you scatter like frightened birds. not a rebellious bone among the three of you.

head for the nearest university, where a famous garden/quad is located. try five roads leading to it - all of them closed. you finally find an "enter here" sign - via the longest route, by the way - but at the last minute, cousin tells you she needs to pee. you drive around looking for an available loo for about 20 minutes. spot the infirmary, decide it's an emergency. after desperate search for john, we settle at the garden/quad for a couple of hours of talking, laughing and figuring out how to turn a peso bill into a miniature t-shirt (via magic of origami).

welcome to my world.
