antiseptic hell vol. 1

(transcribed from back of paper napkin)

today's the day. am finally going to check into a hospital to face my lumpy nemesis. will keep a journal to remind me that things are going to be okay. or perhaps to highlight the irony of that previous statement. maybe things are never going to be okay, whether i slice or not.

6:10 pm

am in admission hell. been waiting for a room for four bloody hours! (yes, during times like these, i have no other choice but to revert to "bloody". also apt - as i am in a hospital.) this place is like boracay during peak season. but instead of tans, everyone is sporting a lovely IV/wheelchair ensemble.

hate this.

7:00 pm

finally in my room. it's a little hole that i'm paying a thousand smackers for. i swear, i think my parking space at work is a lot roomier. there's a bed, a chaise (that has seen better days), a side table and an IV stand. so far, only the IV stand (for now, it's doubling as a hat rack) looks promising.

not even a window to gaze out of (in manner of mtv diva singing a sad, sad love song). turns out that if i had wanted a window, i had to pay 250 bucks more! i swear. this place is a rip-off.

on top of it all, the plastic tag around my wrist is damn itchy! grrr.

i've said it before, i'll say it again: hate this.

8:00 pm

sms for the day:

cousin: be brave, cous.

angie: hope ur ok. will visit u sat, altho u didn't tell me. :p u take care. love yah.

duck: hope ur comfy and getting some rest. :) missed u today!

kath: hey hunnybun! sending u moonbeam-soaked treetops, a cool lavender breeze, giant teddybear hugs & magic bandages to cure all that ails u! :)

rollster: how's life?

marcus: i love you. am coming home as soon as i can.

one panicked call:

princess u: you sure you want to do this?

i don't want to really. but it appears i have no choice.

8:15 pm

just caught a glimpse of dinner. eww. must text brother. need emergency cheese pizza.

8:20 pm

am so freakin' bored. will try to remember all the interesting things i've done these past couple of weeks. hah! this shouldn't be too hard.

saw: my aussie-based cousin. hands down, my favorite cousin. (aside from fake cousin "cousin".) still a hoot after all these years. we (including my big bro) had dinner at italianni's. talked lovingly about dead grandparents and all the childhood pranks they (i had no part in any of said pranks) used to play on them.

saw: "the grudge" - a japanese horror flick that fell way short of expectations. it was rollster's idea to see it as he had free tickets. now i'm harboring a grudge against him. i know, i know - am such an ingrate.

heard: john hiatt's "have a little faith in me" - somehow, it hit close to home this time around.

joined: friendster. think i was the last person in this crazy city to do so.

joined: three bazaars. barely broke even. must rethink this get-rich-not-so-quick scheme.

8:30 pm

they took five ccs of my blood from an all-too willing vein (traitor!). according to my mom: "it doesn't hurt. think 'ant bite'." ant bite? okay, maybe if the ant burrowed two cms beneath my skin and proceeded to suck five ccs of my blood.

they can clone me now. if they wanted to, that is. but why would they want to?

8:45 pm

there are a couple of things i keep in mind during crappy days like these:

1. i am never broken.

2. this, too, shall pass.

9:00 pm

pizza! :)

9:30 pm

was disturbed mid-bite by some orderly. was whisked down to the basement for an ecg. i asked the nurse about the results. good? not good? nod once for "good", twice for "not good". she remained decidedly mum and nod-less. the bitch. what's more, those tiny suction cups left bruises across my chest. pretty much like an overzealous lover.

9:55 pm

my mom (who volunteered to keep me company through this harrowing, yet uber-boring, experience) has just asked me to scoot over. i believe it's "lights out" in a few. good night.
